This year, Maria and Dan are bringing a bag wherever they go - walking in Old Forge, on hiking trails, while taking their dogs for a walk, canoeing, or going for a boat ride. They always find something to pick up and throw away!
"Everyone should keep a bag on hand to pick up any litter they see - every little bit helps to keep this beautiful area clean and safe for our wildlife!" - Maria
Deb Evans, not only cleans around 7th Lake for her yearly MTC self-directed project, but she is a huge advocate for Clean, Drain and Dry to prevent the spread of invasive species. She therefore educated 20 Boy Scouts by providing them with invasive plant handouts as they were paddling along the Fulton Chain of Lakes to Raquette Lake.
Karen and Brad collected glass, pottery shards, and debris from Arrowhead Park in Inlet, NY, and along the shores of 4th Lake for ONE of their self-directed, environmentally-focused improvement projects! Thank you, both for your efforts!
Karen and Brad's second 2025 MTC project!
"Please Maintain The Chain. Took a short walk into Inlet, picking up trash along the way. It baffles me why people discard their cigarette butts everywhere when public receptacles are feet away. One day's worth. Everyone CAN make a difference." - Karen Gorea
Winner of the 2025 MTC "Best Project" award!!!
"This year’s haul so far from 3 afternoons of snorkeling in 4th lake and 7th lake. Also removed a car tire, but that didn’t make it into the photos. When people ask me what I’m doing, I tell them I’m participating in the Maintain the Chain event." - Brian McKittrick
Colleen and her family have been passionate MTC supporters for years! While they couldn’t make it to the ADK this year, they still made a huge impact by organizing daily clean-ups along a New Hampshire beach. Together, they collected all kinds of trash—frisbees, a small American flag, towels, socks, hats, sand toys, flip-flops—and filled nearly a trash bag every single day!
Amanda and her daughters cleaned up near Death Brook Falls, which flows into Raquette Lake! They collected trash — including a surprising amount of glass — from this popular hiking trail. Thanks, Amanda, for teaching the next generation to care for our environment!
Rex and Bambi spent the day cleaning up Sixth & Seventh Lakes. Rex wrestled an Adirondack Chair from the water along with a few other items, including the rusty beer can in his hand (15 pounds of trash)!
Winners of a Gift of Appreciation!
Brett, Joann, Frank, and Jill spend a couple of days cleaning up the northern end of Lake Algonquin on their stand-up paddle boards. They recovered lost and unnatural items from the bottom of the lake!

Ken Streb and his team went scuba diving in Sixth & Seventh Lakes and came up with 15 pounds of trash! Ken is one of the few dive teams that participated in MTC!

Debbie, Lila, Daphne, Ren, and Chris cleaned up the north
shore of Seventh Lake from Arnold's Point to the Sand Beach. Debbie and her grandchildren look forward to the MTC event every year, and we look forward to receiving their photos. Thank you, Debbie, for being a wonderful grandmother, role model, and ardent supporter of the MTC events!
The Harrington Team walked out to the 2nd lean on 7th Lake Road. Although significantly less than in previous years, they still collected about 5-7 pounds of items. The dental picks!! They are the new cigarette butts.
Brad, Jocelen, & Buster visit DeCamps Island every summer between First & Second lakes, picking up garbage, breaking down forts & fire rings (fires are not permitted on the island). Their intent is to keep the island safe & beautiful, as it is some of the only state land on the Fulton Chain where people are welcome to explore!
Come back soon to see more photos of self-directed MTC projects!
